I came across your blog by chance while looking for information about what people write about the Dominican Republic. As the owner of a car rental company, I was pleasantly surprised by how thoroughly you discussed potential issues related to renting cars. By the way, we also had an unpleasant experience trying to rent a car in Mexico City, but in Cancun, it was much easier.

Speaking of the Dominican Republic, the situation has improved somewhat lately—the police are not as corrupt as they used to be. However, I always recommend to our clients to take the ticket and not be afraid. Officers often try to deceive tourists by saying you won’t be allowed to leave the country without paying the fine. That’s not true.

I hope you’ll visit the Dominican Republic again! Your "no all-inclusive hotels" format is really cool, but believe me, you can also have a great time in Punta Cana outside of the resorts, and there are plenty of places to explore! We invite you to come back!

Wish I would have read this before we booked our trip to Punta Cana..Dec 9-16 & just got back…but we were ready to leave by the 12th ….first trip in 6 years & for our 35th anniversary so splurged & did all inclusive, but wish we didn’t… tons of food but really not exceptional…booze everywhere but not our thing ….beaches are nice but not calm like we hoped…had waves like North Carolina! Just bluer & add palm trees! Took excursion to platform to see sand sharks & sting rays but sad! Reef looked bleached & black grass nothing green looked dead…hardly any fish at all ! Photos extra & paid $150 each!! Not happy! Tried to relax & enjoy it but not our vibe! Would have loved to see the country but so many people warned us ..so just stayed at resort. For as much as we spent we could have went to Hawaii!

Thanks so much for your honest opinions. I’ve been researching for the last 2 days and this is the best write up I’ve read. All the other info I found seemed to hype up the destination and yet none of the attractions seemed that interesting to us. My husband and I are well traveled. The DR doesn’t seem to have anything different than what we’ve seen in other places and they don’t seem to be better.

I thought Bayahibe was a nice place to spend a few days. Not much to do except sit on the beach. Not the most beautiful beach in the DR, but very relaxing and great hospitality. The locals are very nice (I'm fluent in Spanish). I walked down to the bay one morning and asked for a ride to Isla Saona, I got on a catamaran. Enjoyed the trip and the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. Took a speed boat back to Bayahibe. That daytrip was very reasonably priced and well worth it. Highly recommend.

THANK YOU! I'm Dominican-American and bringing my partner to the island to met my family and friends. And I don't want us to be trapped in my family home with nothing to do for a week. This blog is SO HELPFUL and has given me so many ideas of where to take him and what to do!
